Food Safety During Outage

  • Refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours if door stays closed
  • Full freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours (24 if half-full)
  • Discard perishable food above 40F (4C) for more than 2 hours
  • Never taste food to determine if it is safe
  • When in doubt, throw it out

Generator Safety

  • NEVER run a generator indoors or in an attached garage
  • Place generator at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent
  • Never connect a generator directly to home wiring (use transfer switch)
  • Let generator cool before refueling
  • Install battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors
