About the Calculation

  • Naismith Rule: 1 hour per 3 miles (5 km) horizontal + 1 hour per 2,000 ft (600 m) ascent
  • Tranter Corrections: Adjusts Naismith time for fitness level (can add 25-100%)
  • Descent: Gentle descent speeds you up, but steep descent slows you down
  • Add 10-15% buffer for rest stops, navigation, photos, and breaks
